Appendix

These are historical statements of fundamental Christian beliefs. They typically are referred to as “creeds.” The most important professions of faith include the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. In the Catechism, professions of faith are often cited by their “DS” numbers. DS is short for “Denzinger and Schönmetzer,” referring to the editors of a handbook containing doctrinal documents of the Church from the time of the apostles to the twentieth century. In addition to the Nicene Creed, professions of faith referenced in the Catechism include the following:

  • Creeds of the different apostolic and ancient Churches
  • Fides Damasi
  • Quicumque
  • Apostles’ Creed
